Learning Community Structures
All learning communities have at their core a small seminar class and a small writing class linked to one or two large lecture classes, but vary widely due to students' needs. Classes in the community are restricted to first-year students and are made co-requisites, so all students in the learning community are at the same place in their college experience. The smaller courses are limited to 25 students, and the same 25 students attend all these classes together, forming a social and intellectual learning community. These cohorts form close relationships that frequently last far beyond the first year of college.
So a Liberal Arts student with dual credit in English might take a 4 hour learning community that looks like this:
UCCP 1101 + SOCI 1301
However, a student in Life Sciences and enrolled in STEP might have a learning community that consists of 15 hours and looks like this:
UCCP 1101 + English 1301 + BIOL 1406 + BIOL LAB + CHEM 1311 + CHEM LAB + MATH 2312
And a College of Education student's learning community might consist of 10 hours and look like this:
UCCP 1101 + English 1301 + History 1301 + Political Science 2305

The Learning Community design all depends on the situation and needs of each student. Remaining hours of a student's schedule are dependent on placement, Core credits transferred, the requirements of their major and personal choice.
